Gigaom reports. “In 1998, NetZero became the first Internet Service Provider to offer free dial-up Internet access; 14 years later it’s doing the same thing except with a different access technology Mobile broadband. Today NetZero revealed its plans to become a virtual 4G service provider, reselling — or in many cases, giving away — Clearwire’s WiMAX bandwidth.” Arstechnica says the NetZero 4G hotspot offers a couple of appealing plan options, but if you use a lot of data, you can get better deals elsewhere. “For customers who live in or travel to Clear 4G areas, consume data in sips rather than gulps, don’t want a two-year, and don’t have a smartphone hotspot to piggyback…this works. Just don’t be too swayed by the lowest-priced or free tiers—you’ll use them up faster than you think.” PCmag agrees — calling NetZero’s 4G hotspot a good choice for a very niche group of users. “If all you need is 1GB or less of mobile broadband per month, the 4G HotSpot can’t be beat. But if your data needs run deeper, you’re better off looking elsewhere. Clear and Virgin Mobile are both good places to start. Both carriers offer unlimited data for $50 per month, which means you can even use those hotspots as a primary home Internet connection.” BGR explains one big potential problem for NetZero.
